Top 11 feb 17
So many people have asked me for advice on what kitchen gadgets and tools they need so we decided to create this top 11 list of BiaMaith recommended kitchen gadgets and tools. These aren’t gimmicky things that you will stick in a drawer and never use again – we reckon these are items you will use again and again. Each of these will make your life in the kitchen a little easier and get those meals on the table that bit faster.

I’ve included amazon links to each item for your convenience. I researched the best prices for each so you don’t have to. Click on any image to go to the Amazon store for that item or look at the links at the bottom of this piece.

PLEASE NOTE… BiaMaith gets a very small commission on any item you purchase that we recommend here. Liam choose each item personally because he knows them to be good products and not based on the commission offered on any item which is mere cents. We will never recommend products just because we get a commission, we must believe in them or we won’t recommend them to you.

1 . AnySharp Knife Sharpener with PowerGrip

Blunt knives are so common. Having a sharp knife, however, makes preparing ingredients so much faster and easier. You may think a sharp knife is more dangerous than a dull one but you have more chance of cutting yourself with a dull blade than with a sharp one due to the amount of extra pressure you have to use with the dull blade.

This handy little gadget means your knives will never be blunt again. It is very easy to use and small enough to store in a drawer out of the way untill needed.

It sharpens straight edge and serrated knives by simply placing the knife in the sharpener and pulling it through. Repeat a few times, clean the blade and away you go.

2. Kitchen Craft Hamburger Maker with 100 Wax Discs

This is something I only recently started using. It has fast become an invaluable kitchen tool. I like to make burgers in batches when mince is on offer. They freeze really well and are so handy when I fancy an easy dinner or if friends pop round, as they can be cooked from frozen. This little gadget makes light work of making any amount of burgers. It keeps your hands clean and the wax disks mean they don’t stick together when stored. It fits into the dishwasher so it’s easy to clean. The burgers themselves are a good size.

3. iNeibo Kitchen Cheese Grater & Lemon Zester

One of my favourite kitchen gadgets, this is something all chefs will have in their knife set. It is so handy. It will grate cheese, chocolate, nutmeg and anything else that you may need to grate. It is also a zester, so will fly through zesting any citrus fruits in seconds. We call them micro planes rather than graters.

So why should you buy one? Because they are a brilliant kitchen tool. When using one, the cheese will go where the tip of the micro plane is pointing for the most part, whereas with a conventional grater, the cheese will end up everywhere except where you want it to go! It also gets stuck to the grater a lot.  A micro plane also grates faster and can be popped into the dishwasher, so are also easy to clean. They are also more easily stored than conventional graters.

5. iNeibo Kitchen Premium Silicone Tongs – Pack of 2

Last summer I left my tongs at a friend’s place after a BBQ and I can’t begin to describe how much I missed them. I ended up buying a new one a few days later. Walk into any professional kitchen and you will see many chefs with a tongs in their hands. We use them as much, if not more, than we use our knives. They are an essential kitchen tool for the professional or home kitchen. This particular one is very good quality, unlike a lot you will see in cheap stores. The cheap ones don’t grip food properly and don’t last.

If you cook at home then this is an essential tool. You can turn meat on a pan or grill with it, use it to turn a roast while also using a fork, stir vegetables or pasta, serve vegetables, meat or pasta, move hot pans or pots without touching them, reach into the oven to turn roasting meats, potatoes, veggies or fish and loads more. The list of reasons to buy one is endless!

Simply put, if you haven’t got one then I highly recommend you get one, you will be delighted you did.

6. OXO Good Grips Garlic Press

A garlic press is one of those kitchen essentials that isn’t just a handy kitchen tool, it also keeps your hands free from the odour of garlic when preparing it.

They are so easy to use. Simply peel the garlic cloves then pop one in and squeeze the handle. It is ideal as it really releases the garlic flavour far more than chopping it does. When chopping or crushing garlic on a chopping board a lot of the flavour is left on the board and your hands. Using a garlic press means all the flavour goes into the dish and not the chopping board or you hands.

7. TOOGOO(R) Silicone baking cooking BBQ basting Brush

A pastry brush is one of those things you don’t realise you need till you are just about to finish a dish off. You have a couple of choices when it comes to a pastry brush. You can go with fibre bristles which is the old type chefs used for years. These are great at doing the job but need to be replaced constantly as the bristles eventually start to fall out and most often end up in your dish. The bristles also melt or burn. Food grade silicone came along and changed all that. The bristles don’t fall out and they are heat resistant, meaning you don’t have to worry about it melting when you use it on hot items.

One of the best things about a silicone pastry brush is they can be used on the BBQ without melting. Ideal for mopping the meats, fish and veggies to keep them moist while cooking.

8. Spoon – TOOGOO(R)White Measuring Spoon

Anyone who cooks at home knows most recipes are measured in teaspoons or tablespoons. A lot of people believe the spoons you use for stirring tea or eating cereal or a dessert will work, however this is wrong. Many recipes need precise measurements especially desserts and breads, this is where a set of measuring spoons are essential. I have 4 or 5 sets as they are something I use all the time, especially when creating recipes. Having a set means you can follow my recipes and get the same results as me every time.

One of the most essential kitchen gadgets a good whisk is not only great for stirring soups and sauces it is also great for making batters, dressings and desserts.

There are a lot of whisks on the market. Most a waste of money. These have silicone handles and are a lot more durable than most. They are the same ones I have been using for the past 2 years and I have been very happy with them. 11. Digital Meat and Cooking Probe Thermometer

If you’ve ever cooked a roast, a breast of chicken, a steak, or any cut of meat and wondered how you will tell if it is cooked then this is the kitchen tool for you.

Every chef on the planet will use one of these multiple times a day. It is the law to have one in professional kitchens. We also have to keep temperature charts of food cooking temperatures.  This is to ensure our customers are safe from harmful bacteria that grows rapidly at certain temperatures. While you don’t have to go through such extremes at home you should temperature check all meats you cook especially chicken and pork.

Why do you need one… They are really easy to use, set the temperature to celsius or fahrenheit then stick the metal probe into the thickest part of the meat you are cooking. The digital display will show the temperature so you know if your food is safe to serve and eat. It will also mean your food tastes better as being able to check the temperature will allow you to cook food exactly how it should be.
