Cheese and onion soda bread

Cheese & Onion White Soda Bread

Heavy and stodgy, this bread just oozes with flavour from the onions and mustard seeds mixed with the lovely cheddar cheese. This will go so well with any of the soups you will find here on my site.

It is so simple to make so I strongly recommend you start with this if you are interested in learning to make bread. Once you have mastered this then give some basic yeast breads a go.

Cheese and onion soda bread

Self Raising Flour – 550g

Bread Soda – 2 tsp

Buttermilk – 250ml

Onion – 1 finely sliced

Salt – 1 tsp

White Cheddar Cheese – 250g grated

Black Pepper – A couple of turns of Ground

Pumpkin Seeds – To top

Mustard Seeds – To top

Sieve the flour and bread soda into a large bowl, mix in the onions, cheese and salt.
Add the buttermilk and mix really well. Pour into a greased (use marg or butter) pan or loaf tin, then add the mustard seeds and pumpkin seeds to the top pressing down slightly to hold them in place.

Bake 180°c for 45 minutes, tap the bottom and if it sounds hollow the bread is ready, remove from the tin, wrap in a tea towel and allow to cool. Bake longer if needed.

Because of the onion and cheese the bread will be stodgy esp when just out of the oven
